Backups: Managing the Vagaries of Technology
In the tech-driven world we are increasingly dependent on computers. There is no department of life where computers have not penetrated. Though this dependence has increased our efficiency phenomenally there are certain pitfalls which can bring things to a stand still. Since, the entire data that we deal with is stored in the computer any technical snag might jeopardize the data retrieval. In this context it makes lot of sense to go for backups to prepare for the risks involved in data management.
The use of backups as a routine procedure is warranted based on the realistic assessment of computer as a fallible machine. Even the best of equipments are prone to fail. Sometimes it may be the result of a hard drive crash. If that happens nothing much could be done to retrieve the data. Some times some files just do not open. Imagine a situation in bank or in the reservation desk of an airline when the data cannot be salvaged. The results can be disastrous. So, it is a routine procedure in banking, defense and aviation industry to go for reliable backups. Usually, large conglomerates have their routine backups built-in their system to combat the erroneous nature of the best of technologies.
The dangers of technical snags are a reality also in the case of individual users of normal computers. Some times your computers are stolen and all the valuable data also is lost along with your computer. So, the idea of backups is essential for anyone. Backups are not merely to manage the unfortunate eventuality of the computer being stolen; it is needed to circumvent factors of human error or willful manipulation of the data on a computer in an organization. Daily practice of creating backups can be of great use as you have always an updated file directly under your control.
In simple backups the data is stored in the same way as it is stored in your computer. Some times to provide greater security to the stored data they are encrypted and stored in such a way that others cannot read or manipulate the stored data. Sometimes files of sensitive nature are stored in different geographical locations to ensure the data in the event of war or other unexpected cataclysms. With satellites aiding in the transfer of data this is resorted to by many companies.
Backups are imperative based on the importance of data. Storing the data on backups on close vicinity is not good idea as the disaster that strikes a geographic area might endanger the backups in that area. The common disasters are earthquakes, fire, flood and electrical surges that can destroy a whole area. It is advisable to automate the process rather than depend on human factor as the human agent might fail in the process of providing backups. Of course this type of real time automation of backups involves sophisticated technology and may not be feasible for individuals. Backups provided for the valuable data is a necessary precaution in an area where even the best of technology has not worked hassle free.
